In September 2017, I decided to try something new in hopes of starting a cleaner, healthier, toxin free, wellness-based lifestyle. I had run the gamut with diets + exercise + medications trying to remedy my PCOS symptoms with little to no success. It was then that I decided that I needed to start with my foundation + build up. Working on healing + wellness rather than results.
So, I hit the submit button + ordered my very first Starter Kit with Young Living, setting out to learn the ways of wellness + essential oils. My Mom had used oils growing up and beyond knowing that it had really helped me with some aches + pains, I knew that they smelled good. No harm, no foul. Over time, I’ve slowly tossed my drug-store makeup + Lysol wipes + Women’s One-A-Day’s in favor of natural, safe ingredients. And it turns out, they provide better results + help us feel better.
Even though purchasing a Starter Kit was just a piece of the puzzle, it’s one of the things that drastically changed my day-to-day life for the better and I would love the same for you. Call me crunchy, but really, I’m just a woman doing my best to take care of my family + myself one day at a time.
I’m going to hone in on oils in this post so I can get specific, but if you’re interested in how we pursue a wellness-based lifestyle on the daily, I’ll be sharing a whole other post on that in the near future.
Now, I admit that oils sound too good to be true, I’ve been there. So, let’s dive into what they are + how they work. Hint hint: they do SO MUCH MORE than make a room smell good.
WHAT are essential oils?
Essential Oils are complex liquids that are obtained from plants via steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin extraction.
Steam Distillation: noun | distillation of a liquid in a current of steam, used especially to purify liquids that are not very volatile and are immiscible with water; separating the substance from liquid by evaporation + condensation.
Cold Pressing: transitive verb | to press (fruit or seeds) without applying heat from an external source (modern steel press), to extract (oil) by cold-pressing; retaining all flavor, aroma + nutritional value.
Resin Extraction: verb | incising the outer layers of a tree to collect the sap or resin, once the resin hardens, it is collected by hand and then steam distilled to extract the essential oil.
Please, give it a google. It’s really an interesting process.
It’s also this process that determines how pure + potent an oil is, which is why you want to know the brand you choose is trustworthy. But more on that later.
These processes are used to extract oils from a number of things: roots, seeds, shrubs, flowers, leaves, trees, fruit, plants. The final result is an aromatic oil that is easily evaporated, making it easy for your body to absorb + utilize.
HOW do essential oils work?
The chemistry of an essential oil contains hundreds of unique, powerful, natural chemical compounds that work with your body on a cellular level—ultimately supporting all NINE systems of the body. If you can’t remember physical science from high school, here’s what that means:
NERVOUS: nerves + cells
IMMUNE: protection + response
INTEGUMENTARY: skin + nails
MUSCULAR + SKELETAL: muscles + bones
EXCRETORY: homeostasis + waste
RESPIRATORY: gas exchange + breathing
CARDIOVASCULAR: blood circulation + nutrient transportation
DIGESTIVE: transforming food into energy
Each variety of oil is capable of working with our body’s systems in a different way, many offer several benefits.
Did you know that within minutes of using an oil, you can find that oil in every organ of your body? Basically, the oil acts a teammate for your body—they work together & quickly.
This can affect us physically + emotionally + psychologically—as the oils stimulate our limbic system (the emotional part of the brain).
HOW do I use essential oils?
I’ve written a whole post on simple + effective ideas for utilizing the oils in Young Living’s Starter Kit, click HERE for more. But in this post, I’m going to keep it to the basics. There are three general uses: aromatic, topical, and internal.
AROMATIC: is the diffusing + inhaling of oils. This distributes the oil into the air via steam—which purifies your space, neutralizes odors + gets into your system. A diffuser is only one option—you can also do a facial steam, make a shower steamer or bath bomb, wear lava stone jewelry, DIY candles, and Essential Oil based products when you clean or freshen up your room. If you want to expedite the process: rub T W O drops of oil into the palm of your hand, cup your hands over your mouth + nose, and breathe deep!
TOPICAL: is applying the oil directly to your skin. The oils easily pass through the “lipid membranes” of your cell walls and are disbursed throughout your body within minutes, making topical use highly effective. Though you can apply oil most everywhere, some of the most popular application spots are wrists, behind the ears, back of neck + feet. Yes, feet. They have large pores + most of your nerve endings are located there, making it an ideal location. Some oils need to be diluted first (conveyed on the label), while others (like Lavender) are gentle enough to be applied with no extra steps. Babies + children require much more diluting than adults, but most of them are still safe to use—even on a newborn (I highly recommend this book to make oils with kiddos stress-free). Carrier oils also provide several benefits + act as a natural moisturizer, so I enjoy using them together. My favorite is liquid coconut oil. Place 1 tsp in your palm, add a couple drops of oil, mix + apply. You can get creative and add the oil to lotion, mix together in a roller bottle, add a drop to your mascara, or add to witch hazel for a DIY facial toner.
INTERNAL: To clarify, not all oils are safe to ingest. However, there are many fruit + herb based oils that are completely safe, classified by the US FDA as “GRAS” (Generally Recognized As Safe). Fun fact, lots of foods that you already eat utilize Essential Oils in their recipes for aroma + flavor—like gum + candy. I personally stick to Young Living’s Vitality line, which is specifically dietary oils. Think peppermint oil in brownies, citrus oils in your water, basil oil in your pasta + Cinnamon Bark in your tea.
WHERE can I get them?
Me! Ok, let’s be brutally honest here—there are SO MANY off brands for essential oils these days. They’ve become extremely popular + it’s incredibly enticing to pay much less for something that looks like the same product that main brands offer. But I’ve personally seen the difference with, exclusively purchase from, and help others sign up for + utilize, Young Living. You get what you pay for. And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen the value in “quality over quantity.” Here are my reasons:
Young Living has been around since 1994 (I was fresh out of diapers—anyone else?). So that’s almost THIRTY years of research & refining their method.
They offer more oils than any other company, both single oils & unique blends.
TRIED & TRUE
They sell first distillation oils only that are rigorously tested both in house & 3rd Young Living is known for being stricter on quality control than any other company—if a batch doesn’t meet their standards, it’s sent back to the farm for use as a natural pesticide not to the shelf for consumers.
Young Living owns each farm, all of which are open to the public for participation in the harvesting & distillation process.
SEED TO SEAL PROMISE
Young Living raises the standard for quality oil & remains hands-on throughout the whole process, from cultivating their own seeds to packaging in house. You can read it for yourself HERE.
Everything is done organically; even the weeding is completed by hand. All distilleries are equipped with stainless steel & glass tools so that your oil never comes in contact with plastic, which could leech into the final product.
I have used cheapie brands (found in grocery stores & Amazon) for years because who wants to spend more money on the same oils? Not to throw shade but let’s be brutally honest—those brands use fillers & synthetic products to make production more cost effective. Young Living costs more because it is worth far more—being highly concentrated & pure, meaning they are most effective & beneficial. In bacteria fighting tests, Young Living wins. every. time.
YOUNG LIVING FOUNDATION
The Young Living Foundation, founded in 2009, is committed to “empowering individuals to achieve their potential and defy limitations by providing wellness and education opportunities to underserved communities.” This is accomplished by personally overseeing projects & working with those in need (as with the Young Living Academy in Ecuador or service trips to Nepal, to name only two current projects) as well as partnering with qualified organizations.
Young Living is community driven—providing amazing support and education for all consumers.
