Fall. There is no other season that I love to smell more than fall. The spices. The foods. The crisp air & falling leaves. It truly feels magical. Whether that’s made up in my mind or not, I really don’t care. I LOVE this time of year.
One of the hardest things for me to “Ditch & Switch” in my pursuit of a healthier home was candles. I love the ambiance of a burning candle and even more so, the Bath & Body Works fall line. But here’s the thing, those candles are chock full of synthetic chemicals that are released into the air when burned so it’s something I feel compelled to eliminate. Health kinda trumps the NEED for Pumpkin Spice, ya know.
But this has caused me to find other, healthier, better ways to fill my home with fall smells & ambiance. I’m happy to report that there are a variety of ways to bring fall indoors at no cost to your health.
STOVE TOP POTPOURRI
Do you remember walking into the kitchen after your Grandma & Mom were canning applesauce all day? The warmth + spiciness? Or perhaps it’s Thanksgiving day with pies baking in the oven. Either way, this simple potpourri is the perfect way to make your home smell like you’ve been baking all day without committing to the actual baking.
Best part? You probably have most of these items in your kitchen RIGHT NOW.
What you’ll need…
- 1 apple
- 1 orange
- cinnamon sticks
- whole nutmegs (or Nutmeg Essential Oil–I used the oil because I couldn’t find whole nutmeg at our grocery store)
- whole cloves
- 1 tsp of vanilla (OPTIONAL)
What to do…
Slice the orange & apple | Place the orange slices (squeeze slightly to release oils) + apple slices + cinnamon sticks + roughly 1 tsp of cloves + 1 tsp vanilla + 2-3 drops of Nutmeg essential oil into a medium saucepan | Fill the saucepan just over halfway with water | Bring the pan to a low boil then reduce heat to a simmer | I use a wooden spoon to stir the ingredients, helping them to break down slightly & release their natural scents
You can keep simmering this pot throughout the day, adding water as it evaporates (I usually just fill the pot, so I don’t have to worry about checking on it). I keep the same pot for a couple days, refilling & simmering, before tossing & starting fresh.
FALL ROOM SPRAY
Make your own room spray with the essential oils you have on hand. All you have to do is take ANY diffuser recipe that sounds yummy to you and double it.
- 2oz glass spray bottle (the bottles I use)
- 2 TBSP Witch Hazel
- Distilled Water
- Essential Oils of choice (for “Fall Spice” I used > 6 drops Thieves | 4 Drops Orange | 2 drops Ginger
Add Essential Oils to glass spray bottle | With a funnel, add in 2 TBSP of Witch Hazel + fill the rest with distilled water | Replace the cap + gently shake to mix | Spray!
And last but not least…
FALL DIFFUSER BOMBS
My go-to method for fall smells (or any smells, really) is using my trusty, ol’ diffuser. I have several oils in my stock that I’ve collected & earned over the years, so it’s easy to pull from my shelf and add a few drops of this or that to my diffuser and let it roll.
One way to make this even easier is to make a big batch of your favorite blends ahead of time. Use a glass dropper bottle to triple, quadruple, or quintuple your recipes. These are the glass dropper bottles that I use.
Then, keep that dropper bottle next to your diffuser rather than 20+ bottles like I’m apt to do–gently shake & add a dropper whenever you’re in the mood.
Here are some of my favorites this fall…
P.S. Utilize these recipes as a starting point, then tweak my recipes as it smells good to you.
