It’s no secret that fall is my favorite time of the year. Something about the season evokes the romantic in me, maybe it’s the cozy sweaters or the first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year. Regardless of your favorite season, there is always something to celebrate and savor from each respective season. Each year I pull from my seasonal stock pile but also look for new things to try. It’s hard to be choosy, but here are some of my favorite “must-haves” for fall 2017.
APPLE SALT SCRUB from Hyman’s Seafood
Along with colder weather comes dry skin. Now that I’m officially closer to 30 I am trying to take care of my skin with a consistent routine. I guess the reality of my mortality is setting in and I’m realizing that my skin, like every other aspect in life, isn’t as great as it once was. One of the items that I love to use, especially on my hands, is this salt scrub.
It sits right next to the soap and lotion on our bathroom vanity. We found this brand while on vacation in Charleston last year. They bait you with AMAZING SMELLING scrubs to use in the bathroom then catch you in the gift shop on the way out. I admit. It was a sales trap and I definitely caved. But I don’t regret it. The deliciously famous seafood restaurant that this store is attached to, Hyman’s Seafood, provides the natural sea salt for the scrub. Which is cool, but it’s the smell and the result that made me cave. I mean, who doesn’t want super soft hands that smell like apple pie?
HENLEY SWING DRESS from Old Navy
This dress is my new favorite. I usually stick to fitted dresses with clean lines because of my curvy figure but I made room in my closet for this dress. Because of the slight waist I can wear it without looking like a balloon. I like that this dress is interesting while being simple, embodying a casual bohemian style.
The loose sleeves are great on their own but I also like to layer with sweaters and finish with suede booties. It’s a perfect “early fall” dress that can be paired with tights when the mornings are more crisp. As for accessories, I typically wear a simple suede choker to contrast against the neckline or my stamped cuff from Magnolia Market. It is SO comfortable and the olive green is a true fall color.
OATMEAL COOKIE ICE CREAM from Halo
Another thing that we often think of in the colder months is F O O D. Not health food, comfort food. I’m determined to not let the season ruin my diet and run for a Pumpkin Macchiato every time I feel like it. But occasionally, a woman needs to splurge. What better way to splurge than on than Halo ice cream?
This ice cream literally has pieces of oatmeal in it and tasty bits of cinnamon. It’s like eating an oatmeal cookie soaked in milk. Even though it’s ice cream, it warms me up from the inside. I could literally go on about this stuff for days—just trust me and go grab a pint for yourself.
CINNAMON CHIPS from Hershey’s
Speaking of oatmeal & cinnamon cookies, I discovered these seasonal chips a few years ago and it’s become a fall staple. I just follow the recipe on the back, which is basically an oatmeal cookie with the addition of cinnamon chips.
NO RAISINS. I’m sorry, am I the only one that eats through the raisins (and attempts to pick out said raisins) just because the oatmeal cookie is worth the effort? Cinnamon chips are genius. Once you have them you’ll wonder why you’ve only used chocolate so far.
“IT IS WELL” STAMPED CUFF from Magnolia Market
This cuff is the perfect accessory to just about any fall outfit. I love wearing it with my Henley dress, the gold against the olive green is just…yes. The handmade, earthy metal look of the cuff makes it unique and huge bonus, it’s comfortable to wear.
I’m more of a jewelry minimalist and I never wear bracelets because I find them to be irritating. However this cuff makes the cut and it’s probably one of my all-time favorite pieces. More than that, this particular hymn bears a lot of meaning & encouragement to me. I love catching a glimpse of it on my wrist and being reminded of the true peace that I have in Christ.
FOOD IN JARS by Marisa McClellan
A lot of people find canning to be intimidating. In fact, I did before I gave it a try. But this book breaks it down and makes it seem simple. You’ll even catch yourself having fun with it. It covers everything from necessary tools to detailed recipes with pictures.
There is a perfect mix of recipes: jams, jellies, pickling, butters, marmalades, sauces, you name it. I love that along with the basic recipes that everyone thinks of when canning, Marisa throws in just as many creative and unique recipes. I start to drool when I read the recipe titles, like “Apple Almond Honey Conserve,” “Strawberry Balsamic Jam,” and “Meyer Lemon Curd.” You can also check out Marisa’s recipes & how-to’s on her blog.
FLIPPING AWESOME CANDLE from Bath & Body Works
Who doesn’t love a good B&BW candle? I mean, the deals & the smells…it’s enough to make a girl go broke. I usually stick to my classic favorites but this particular candle is a newbie this year and I had to experiment.
This delicious, pumpkin pecan scent made me go weak in the knees and I had to share. Wait for the next BOGO or Half-Off sale and snag one for yourself. Instant fall for your home.
VINTAGE CAST IRON ANTLER WALL HOOKS from Comfify
I have wanted antler hooks for a long time, ever since I saw a black version in an Airstream remodel way back when. It’s simple and perfect for a fall, farmhouse look.
I’m still debating on spray painting this one to a black, balancing the rustic with my modern flair. Either way, I love the look and it will soon find a home in my closet holding favorite necklaces.
Before the weather gets too cold, I like to soak up the outdoors as much as possible. Still, some days you can’t get around that typical, chilly, wet fall weather. I look at it as an opportunity to cozy up inside and play those games that we keep saying we should make time for.
One of our all-time favorites is Dutch Blitz; a fast-paced, family style, card classic that really seems to bring out the competitor in us. It’s perfect for inviting friends in from the cold to play a round or two.
BUFFALO CHECK PILLOWS from 4TH Emotion
I’m still hooked on the Buffalo Check trend, it’s just so cozy. These pillow covers make for a quick, seasonal transformation of your throw pillows for only $7.98 per cover on Amazon Prime.
Let’s just pretend that the cats don’t use my couch as a scratching post. If you’re like me and don’t have time to sew your own, this is the perfect, budget friendly answer.
YOU’VE GOT MAIL
I know this isn’t specifically a fall film but I get the hankering to turn it on when fall rolls around. This is primarily because of that classic, opening line, “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address…”
Um yes, Tom Hanks, you can send that pencil bouquet my way! In the meantime, I’ll be over here crying happy tears when you and Kathleen Kelly work things out.
THE COZY SCARF by Mer-Sea & Co.
Cue my shameless plug for the FabFitFun box (which you’ve probably seen plastered all over social media). Not to add to the noise but I wouldn’t bring it up if it weren’t worthwhile. I recently received my fall box and found this deliciously cozy scarf inside. I basically wrapped my whole head in it and walked around the house all day because I just didn’t want to take it off. The thought hit me that this would be a perfect “fall favorite” item for this post, so I searched Mer-Sea and located the scarf.
My jaw dropped when I saw the price. $98. NINETY-EIGHT DOLLARS! It was then that I became acutely aware of any potential opportunities for my scarf to be snagged, stepped on, or slept on by the cats. I swear that scarf gets better treatment than the cats now. Initially, I wasn’t going to advertise a scarf that costs as much as my utility bill but then I realized, you need to know that you can get in on amazing products like this because that’s what friends do. I paid $50 for this quarter’s box which was chock-full of goodies; the scarf alone is valued at double that amount. Don’t wait forever to try it like I did because it actually is worth the cost (and it’s just so fun to get cool things in the mail!).
THE BACKPACK PURSE
I purchased this bag as an add-on to my FabFitFun box at half-price; unfortunately, that deal has come and gone. But I didn’t bring up the bag to rub it in your face. This backpack purse trend is hot for a reason.
More pockets for stashing things (instead of things sloshing around your bag) and more comfortable to wear (which is huge for persons with bad backs and tight shoulders like me). Beyond practicality, I think it’s super cute and fashion forward. Even if you don’t want this one, the style is trending so there are lots of backpack bags out there to snatch like these from Target, Sole Society, or Francesca’s. Trust me, it’s better than a sore arm.
THE YEAR OF COZY by Adrianna Adarme
This inspirational DIY guide isn’t just for fall but it’s this time of year that I think to whip it out. I mean, it is called the “year of cozy”…and right now, I want to be cozy.
There is a wonderfully creative blend of recipes, crafts, and decor ideas included within this book. Even if you don’t actually do anything in the book, the pictures alone are worth flipping through.
WASHI MASKING TAPES by MT
With the new school year/fall activities resuming, it’s all the more important to be organized. Even if I lost touch with my planner over the summer, I usually pick it up again for the fall.
I am very visual, the more creative & colorful the planner, the better! Which means, I love markers, stickies, and tapes. It can be hard to find a washi tape that actually sticks so I was super happy when I found this set on Amazon. Soft & durable tape in all sorts of pretty colors, happy planning to me!
What are some of your essentials this fall?
