One bath item that I always have on hand, ok…aside from soap & shampoo, is salt scrub. Especially in the winter. Itchy, dry skin is the worst. Exfoliating is a must.
This homemade Himalayan Salt Scrub is a perfect gift for anybody on your list–you can make it super feminine or add a masculine touch (probably with non-pink salt). 😉 And it’s really, really, REALLY easy to make.
HIMALAYAN SALT SCRUB
WHAT YOU NEED
You can certainly use regular sea salt but the pink himalayan is just prettier. And sounds fancier. I mean, just look at it. You can find this in most stores but it’s also available on Amazon Prime.
This stuff is ‘da bomb.com. Fractionated = always liquid. I keep this on hand as a carrier oil for topical application–smells so delicious & makes your skin oh-so-soft. Baby butt soft. Just know that coconut oil is a bit more on the potent side, so you want your oils to complement the natural coconut scent.
Take your pick of one of the many, many, many oils out there. As you probably know by now, I’m a huge fan of Young Living-–you can read all about the benefits of EO & why I chose Young Living here.
Pick up some fresh herbs at the market, sprinkle in some dried flowers, mix in a little honey, or toss in some spices. This is the part where you can be really creative & add fun elements to spruce up the scrub.
Container with Lid
Again, I love the mason jars. They’re easy to find (most people already have them on hand) & they are the perfect size. If you’re not feeling the mason jars there are so many containers available on Amazon for exactly these sorts of projects. Like this one with an attached spoon or this more modern, sleek container.
WHAT TO DO
Ok. Are you ready? I’m not even going to number this into bullet points because it’s so stinkin’ easy. In fact, you could guesstimate just fine because this isn’t an exact science–it’s more of a feeling. 😉 But in the spirit of following through…
In a bowl mix together Himalayan salt with chosen essential oils, extra additions, and coconut oil. Annnnnd you’re done! Spoon the mixture into your chosen container & spruce it up a bit–ready to gift.
For the record: definitely mix in a bowl & spoon the mixture into the containers later. I took the harder road (thinking I’d save a dirty dish) & mixed everything in the mason jar…with a spare wick centering tool because, I’m classy like that. Let’s just say, it’s significantly less messy & painful to mix it in a bowl instead of the jar.
As for the oil, I only added a few pumps because I prefer more salt than liquid for supreme exfoliation–completely up to your personal preference. Just keep pumpin’ until you like the consistency.
You can keep it simple, using one straight oil or get creative with combos. It’s a lot of fun to come up with new blends–but here are a few of my favorites to get you started:
GRAPEFRUIT, ORANGE, LEMON & MINT
A perfect, bright blend for boosting your mood in the winter. Let’s just imagine the rosemary is actually a mint leaf. 😉
CEDARWOOD & ROSEMARY
This is a clean, comforting, calming scent. Cedarwood is earthy & woodsy–known for it’s astringent & antiseptic properties.
LAVENDER & LEMON
Invigorating & cleansing. This is a strong combination–extremely relaxing & uplifting.
YLANG YLANG & ROSE PETALS
A deep, floral combination. Let’s not beat around the bush, Ylang Ylang is commonly known for being a sensual oil. But it’s an awesome oil (smells AH-mazing) to use whether you’re trying to set the mood or not. 😉 Ylang Ylang promotes a calm & uplifted mood, as well as many other practical health benefits. P.S. Definitely chop up the dried rose petals before adding.
LEMON & ROSEMARY
Clean & refreshing. Both ingredients are clarifying & anti-inflammatory. It’s one of those timeless scents.
EUCALYPTUS & PEPPERMINT
LAVENDER & VANILLA
LIME & MINT
TEA TREE & MINT
CINNAMON & ORANGE
LEMON & HONEY
ROSEMARY & MINT
MORE MANLY SCENTS:
BLACK SPRUCE & FRANKINCENSE
CYPRESS, WHITE FIR & CEDARWOOD
PATCHOULI, SANDALWOOD & CEDARWOOD
MISTER, IDAHO BLUE SPRUCE & YLANG YLANG
YLANG YLANG, BERGAMOT & BLACK PEPPER
SHUTRAN & DRIED LAVENDER
I’ll take one of each, please. This DIY is so simple & budget friendly that you could easily add a couple other bath items to complement the scrub (like: loofah sponge, towel set, face mask, lotion) & make up a gift basket. What combos & delicious smells would you put together?
Hang tight–another super easy & creative DIY gift coming your way tomorrow! xx
